Thomas Spryng died a year after work on the new church had started but left a considerable part of his wealth to his son Thomas for finishing the job. This son, Thomas the Rich, died in 1523 and bequeathed £ 200 for «the finishing of the Stepul». He wanted his coat of arms to be affixed to the tower 32 times; this was considerable more than his father's wish 32 years earlier, who wanted it to be affixed once to the base of the tower. He also stipulated in his will that a chapel chapel be added to the south flank in commemoration of himself and his wife Alice, adding that he also wanted his body to be buried in the church
«be fore the Awter of Saint Kateryn, where I will be made a Tombe with a Parclose thereabout».
Thomas' wealth can also be gleaned from the fact hat in his will he left
«£ 100 in all such townes and parisshes as I have any lands and tenements ... to the prests, clerks and pour folks to pray for my soule and all my benefactors soules»
- altogether 130 places!
