Eye, Suffolk

Interior of the St Peter and St Paul at Eye.

Interior of the St Peter and St Paul of Eye.
Wooden, crowned sculptures in the roof of the St Peter and St Paul at Eye

The roof was thoroughly restored in 1869.
The wooden, crowned sculptures in the roof
probably date from 1869.

The tower was built towards the end of the fifteenth century. In that time the church, which dated from the early fourteenth century, was refurbished and made higher by adding a clerestore under the roof. The stained glass, however, was destroyed. On August 30, 1643, William Dowsing, the Parliamentary Visitor officially appointed in 1643 to carry out and supervise the destruction of altars, imagery and "superstitious" inscriptions in Suffolk, on the instruction of the Earl of Manchester, destroyed «seven superstitious windows and a cross. One was Mary Magdelene, all in glass, and six in the church windows, and many had been broken down». During a large restoration in 1969 clear glass was fitted under the roof, so that the interior is now evenly lit and bright.
