This roadside is full of Corn Poppy or Red Poppy or Wild Field Poppy: Papaver rhoeas. This wild species is associated with agricultural cultivation. The wild field poppy enjoys cultivated disturbed soil, which is why sheets of scarlet blooms sometimes appear in corn fields, and why it is associated with agricultural cultivation and fertility. However, a newly formed sandy and stony roadside, as in the above example, is also a favourite place. Since during World War I poppies bloomed in much of the western front, this species is associated with that war, and has become a symbol for military veterans particularly in the English speaking world.
It is a variable annual plant, usually with vivid red flowers, surrounding a black center. In the northern hemisphere it generally flowers in June.
