Southern Kruger National Park
Nkumbe lookout
If you take the H10 from Tshokwane Picnic Spot towards Lower Sabie, or vice versa, you will pass the Nkumbe viewpoint. It sits upon a clifftop and, from an elevation of 94 metres above the surrounding land, provides you with a beautiful overview of a vast flat area of the Southern Kruger National Park. From this vantage point you may see herds of zebra and wildebeest trekking across the grasslands below.
You are allowed to alight the car at the lookout, albeit "at your own risk" according to a sign. During a visit in 2003 we came to appreciate this sign more fully.
We had parked our car and had just walked to the viewpoint at the edge of the cliff when we noticed people who remained within their car and looked intently into the bushes at the edge of the parking lot. So we curiously walked back. Surprisingly, they had spotted a lion cub in the dense bush, nicely protected from the harsh sun. Mom seemed to be out hunting. In view of regular reports of lions occupying the car park, watch out!
